The Young Reader’s Programme was set up by the National Literacy Trust to support all children develop their love of books and reading through a series of fun events focused on book choice and reading enjoyment. Reading for enjoyment is proven to be more important for a child’s cognitive development than their parents’ level of education. Children who enjoy reading are three times more likely to read above the level expected for their age. Children who enjoy reading make more progress in maths, vocabulary and spelling. Children who have a book of their own have a higher level of mental wellbeing generally. Children who have books at home enjoy reading more and read more frequently. Children’s main reason to read is to relax.
At Stuart Road Primary, we are delighted to have been selected to take part in the Young Reader’s Programme. We had our first book party this week! Children from years 2, 3 and 4 joined us to learn about different ways to choose a book. The children then explored the selection of books on offer with adult support before choosing their own book to take home and keep. The children had the opportunity to browse through a range of books to order one of their choice for our next event in June. Our party kickstarted the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and the theme was celebrating inspirational people past and present. Children also enjoyed face painting, arts and crafts and of course a party tea!
Our next event will be in June, followed by a final celebration event in July when we will have a special visitor from Plymouth Drake Circus. At each event, children will choose a book to bring home and keep. We hope you enjoy sharing the books your child choses and treasure them at home.
